Energy demand and natural gas prices often seem to paint a picture of high bills during the holiday season. So it’s normal for Ohio energy customers to worry about their winter bills this year. However, a powerful El Nino this winter may paint good news for many Ohio rate payers. So let’s take a look at how much higher your Ohio heating bill will be this winter.

Natural Gas Affects Ohio Heating Bill

Natural gas prices affect everyone’s winter bills. Not only does gas heat most Ohio home but it also fuels over half of Ohio electric generators. Fortunately, NOAA predicts a warmer than usual winter this year. In Ohio, this means homes may use less energy for heat. As a result, lower demand could push down natural gas prices in the next few months.

For example, gas customers with Columbia Gas OH currently pay a standard choice offer (SCO) of $0.525 per ccf. This rate changes monthly, so it could drop as soon as when the rate expires on October 26.

Ohio Electricity Price Hike

Customers using electric heat may see a higher bill this winter. Electric prices in the PJM region have been rising due to higher wholesale prices and auction price results. It’s important to note that wholesale costs include the cost to generate power (specifically natural gas as fuel), capacity, transmission service, and back office fees. In fact, July 2026 wholesale electric prices saw large swings. As a result, we might see electric rates rise this winter.

On the other hand, Ohio is seeing lower gas demand, likely due to warmer temperatures. For example, the current AEP Ohio PTC rate is 10.19 cents per kilowatt-hour (kWh). That’s a little lower than their September rate. This rate won’t expire until December 31. So, while there are no guarantees, this could keep power rates steady.

Will Ohio Winter Weather Affect Prices?

It’s important to remember NOAA predicts this El Nino will be stronger than normal and may bring a much warmer winter to Ohio. However, an El Nino can disrupt the polar vortex and lead to Arctic cold snaps coming the state. So, this winter, consumers may need to fire up the heat for few days to stay cozy. There is a chance that this may raise electric rate in January and February, too. So, shopping for best gas or electric supplier today could keep your prices steady in the long term.

You can always start your shopping right here at https://www.ohenergyratings.com.
