History of Toledo
Toledo was among the larger parts that were controlled by the Wyandot and individuals from the Council of Three Fires which are historic tribes. In early 1680, the Frenchmen introduced trading spots in the region by taking advantage of the fur trade which was lucrative. It is also at this time when the Odawa moved from the Mountain Island and the Bruce Peninsula after an invitation from the French. There was a bustling trading point introduced by the French at Fort Detroit which is almost 6o miles towards the north. These visitors settled on an area that extended towards the northwest part of Ohio.
As of the 18 th century, there were many Odawa citizens living on the shores of River Maumee. These inhabitants were considered middlemen between the tribes that were on the north and west and the French. Central Ohio was occupied by the Wyandot while the Lenape and Shawnee occupied areas on the south side of Ohio.
