Problems with Fees and Charges (590 reviews)
HIgh prices & HIGH added FEES
“ I have had Green Mountain for several years. Prices are high compared to other companies, but felt that I was at least helping the environment. Was totally discusted with this company though when I moved & transfered my service. I had paid my bills on time up to the point when I moved. Inv was due on the 30th, not even a month late, I was sent a disconnect notice. I paid as soon as I got paid, which was still only a couple weeks late. On my next invoice, I had not only a late fee of $10.60 but also a disconnect notice fee of $20.00. I called thinking that with my past history of payments that they would waive the disconnect fee (I was paying the late fee since I knew I was late). What I got instead was a lecture from the representaive that my bill was due on the 30th & that they could disconnect anytime after that date, but they instead send a disconnect notice in which they graciaously give me an additional 14 days to pay & that I deserved the disconnect fee. So I am locked into a year contract, will have to wait until that is done & then will find another provider. I will say that not all representatives that I have spoken with have been this rude & aweful, but if your going to pay the high prices you hope that they wouldn't try to gouge you with other fees as well. ”

about average compared to other providers
“ What I dont understand is why when your plan expires they jack up the rate per kWh. Every provider Ive had does it including Ambit. What about customer loyalty? Doesnt matter - its all about hail to the ol mighty dollar. Was an Ambit customer for 2+years and paid late a few times because the bill was so high I couldnt afford it. They charge enormous late fees and will disconnect your service at the drop of a hat then demand the bill + deposit of $400 or greater. I had to pay over $600 to get it reconnected. They turned it off during the summer here in Texas and I have children in my home. I dont think that deregulation should mean deregulating completely. The fees they charge usurious and she be banned. I dont think I save any more money now then I did when TXU was the only provider. I think the whole electricity industry is running a racket. ”

Be Careful!
“ Startex is a company that will be sufficient when everything is running fine. However, I had a payment sent a few days late (no late payments for previous 10 months), and they cancelled my power WITHOUT any notification. The power was shut off when my wife was home with our newborn baby. They threatened to keep the power off until I transferred payment to them, but then customer service completely fell apart when I broke off my contract. They keep calling for their final payment despite breaking the contractual obligations of warning us about service termination. Since that time they have added $300 more in fees. Be careful, this company is nice when you are paying on time, but miss one payment, and they will bring the house down on you! ”
