Founded in 1805, Canton initially became a thriving manufacturing center due to its convenient proximity to several major transportation routes. In recent years, however, Canton has focused more on its service industry, primarily retail, finance, and healthcare. As of 2010, Canton had a population of approximately 73,000 within the city limits and a total of over 400,000 residents in the surrounding metropolitan area.

Canton has a rich history and was the home of William McKinley when he ran for and won the presidency in 1896. Visitors to Canton can take in the McKinley Presidential Library & Museum, a world-class library and museum filled with a delightful collection of books, artifacts, and artwork.
